The quick answer
Massage may provide supportive, short-term relief by addressing muscle tension in the forearm, upper arm, shoulder, wrist, and hand. It does not repair an irritated tendon or rebuild its capacity. Lasting recovery commonly depends on identifying aggravating activities and gradually restoring strength and tolerance.
First, understand what is irritated
Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow are overuse-related tendon conditions near the elbow. Tennis elbow generally involves the tendon attachment on the outside of the elbow, while golfer’s elbow generally involves the attachment on the inside.
The forearm muscles responsible for gripping, wrist movement, finger movement, and forearm rotation connect to these areas. Repeated or rapidly increased loading can exceed the tendon’s current capacity.
These are not limited to athletes
Typing, tool use, cooking, painting, lifting, gardening, caregiving, warehouse work, instrument playing, and other repetitive tasks can load the same muscle and tendon groups.
What massage may help with
Massage therapy works with soft tissues, including muscles and connective tissue. When massage is appropriate and comfortable, it may support some parts of the recovery experience.
Surrounding muscle tension
Repeated gripping and wrist movement may leave the forearm muscles feeling tight, fatigued, or guarded. Comfortable massage may help reduce that sensation temporarily.
General comfort
Gentle, appropriately adjusted bodywork may help some people feel more comfortable moving the wrist, forearm, or elbow.
Relaxation and guarding
Pain and repeated effort can cause people to hold unnecessary tension through the hand, shoulder, neck, and upper arm. Massage may encourage relaxation in those areas.
Movement awareness
A session may help you notice excessive gripping, shoulder elevation, wrist positioning, or other habits that contribute to repeated loading.
What does the research say?
Research on manual therapy for lateral elbow pain suggests that it may offer small short-term improvements for some people, but the certainty of the evidence is low and benefits may not continue after treatment ends. Evidence for deep transverse-friction massage specifically is insufficient to confirm meaningful benefit.
What massage cannot do
Massage should not be presented as a cure for tendon pain. It cannot replace the biological adaptation that occurs when a tendon is progressively and appropriately loaded.
Massage cannot confirm the diagnosis
Elbow pain can also involve a nerve, joint, ligament, bursa, fracture, neck, or shoulder. Massage therapists do not diagnose these conditions.
Massage cannot repair a tear
Manual pressure cannot reconnect or reconstruct damaged tendon fibers, ligaments, nerves, or other injured structures.
Massage cannot rebuild capacity
The tendon must gradually adapt to activity through appropriate loading, strengthening, recovery, and time.
Massage cannot remove the cause
Symptoms may return when the same work, training, gripping, equipment, or movement demands continue without modification.
What an appropriate massage session may include
A thoughtful session should consider the entire chain of muscles involved in gripping and upper-extremity movement—not only the painful spot at the elbow.
Discuss symptoms and activity demands
Your therapist should ask where you feel discomfort, what activities increase it, how long it has been present, and whether you have received a medical diagnosis or treatment plan.
Work within a comfortable range
Pressure should be adjusted to your sensitivity and current stage of recovery. More pressure is not automatically more effective.
Address connected regions
Treatment may include the forearm, wrist, hand, upper arm, shoulder, upper back, or neck when those areas are relevant and appropriate.
Avoid aggressive irritation
Repeatedly digging into a painful tendon attachment can increase sensitivity. Work directly over the area should be conservative and based on your response.
Reassess comfort
Your therapist should check whether movement feels the same, better, or worse and adjust the session accordingly.
Why rehabilitation still matters
Passive care may influence symptoms, but tendons become more capable through gradual exposure to appropriate demand. Strengthening and load management are therefore central parts of many elbow-rehabilitation programs.
Identify aggravating loads
Notice which gripping, lifting, typing, throwing, tool, sport, or household tasks repeatedly increase symptoms.
Modify rather than abandon movement
Short-term adjustments may be helpful, but prolonged complete rest can reduce strength and tolerance.
Rebuild strength gradually
A healthcare professional may recommend progressive wrist, grip, forearm, shoulder, or upper-extremity exercises.
Allow time for adaptation
Tendon symptoms may improve slowly. Sudden jumps in activity can exceed the tissue’s current capacity again.
Supportive care works best as part of a plan
Massage, activity modification, ergonomic changes, medical or physical-therapy guidance, progressive exercise, sleep, and recovery habits may each serve a different purpose.
Practical self-care between sessions
- Temporarily reduce the intensity, duration, or frequency of activities that consistently increase symptoms.
- Break repetitive gripping, typing, lifting, or tool use into shorter periods.
- Use the lightest effective grip instead of squeezing harder than necessary.
- Keep the wrist closer to a neutral position when your task allows.
- Review the size, weight, handle, and setup of frequently used tools or equipment.
- Use gentle elbow, wrist, and forearm movement within a comfortable range.
- Follow strengthening or rehabilitation guidance provided by an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
- Avoid repeatedly pressing, scraping, or aggressively stretching the most sensitive point.
When massage should wait or be modified
Massage may need to be postponed, limited, or medically cleared when symptoms suggest something more than uncomplicated overuse.
- A recent fall, collision, forceful pull, or other injury.
- Severe swelling, bruising, redness, or warmth.
- Visible deformity or inability to move the elbow normally.
- Sudden loss of strength or grip.
- Persistent numbness, tingling, or burning symptoms.
- An open wound, infection, or irritated skin.
- A suspected fracture, tendon rupture, or ligament injury.
- Pain that is rapidly worsening or consistently disturbing sleep.
When to seek medical care
Arrange prompt evaluation when appropriate
Seek medical care after a significant injury or when you have deformity, severe swelling, extensive bruising, inability to use the arm, sudden weakness, persistent numbness or tingling, redness with warmth or fever, worsening night pain, or symptoms that continue to interfere with work, sleep, sports, or daily activities.
Evaluation is also appropriate when symptoms do not begin to improve with reasonable activity modification or when you are unsure whether the discomfort involves a tendon, joint, nerve, ligament, neck, shoulder, or another structure.
